What’s the deal with hollow point ammunition?

Hollow point bullets are a type of ammunition designed with a hollowed-out shape at the tip. This design causes the bullet to expand upon impact, increasing in diameter as it penetrates a target. They are noteworthy because the end of the bullet appears to be open. Here’s the deal with hollow points:

  1. Increased Stopping Power: The bullet expands upon hitting its target, creating a larger wound channel. This expansion transfers more energy to the target and increases the likelihood of incapacitating it quickly, which is why they’re favored for self-defense and law enforcement. Simply put, imagine someone being struck with a quarter size mass of metal as opposed to the traditional top of a full metal jacket projectile.
  2. Reduced Risk of Over-Penetration: Unlike full metal jacket (FMJ) bullets, hollow points are less likely to pass through a target and continue traveling. This reduces the risk of collateral damage in situations where bystanders might be nearby. Basically, the projectile loses its velocity quickly reducing the risk of it going through the target.
  3. Debate and Controversy: Some critics argue that hollow points are excessively lethal and question their use in certain situations. They are banned in warfare by international conventions (like the Hague Convention), though they are legal for civilian and law enforcement use in many places.
  4. Self-Defense: In self-defense, hollow points are often considered ideal because they maximize stopping power while minimizing the risk of harming others.

Overall, hollow points are about efficiency, offering both safety benefits in crowded environments and greater effectiveness in quickly neutralizing threats. We offer many variations of hollow point rounds. I am a huge fan of the Hornady Critical Defense Rounds – out of about a thousand rounds fired I have only had one misfire. It was very recent and I discuss it elsewhere on our blog
