What is dirty ammo?

When someone refers to ammo as “dirty,” they’re typically describing ammunition that leaves behind residue or fouling after firing, which can accumulate in the firearm’s barrel or action. All ammunition after being fired leaves behind some waste products and residue. “Dirty” ammo just means that it leaves behind more residue or waste product after firing. This residue can affect the firearm’s performance if not cleaned regularly.

Russian and Eastern Europe ammunition is notoriously dirty. Wolf Ammo, classic Russian ammo, is likely the best known dirt ammunition of all time. Everyone that’s shot Wolf Ammo is familiar with how dirty their gun is after shooting. You can literally rub your fingers on the firearm and see the soot on your hands. It is critical to clean your firearm after every use especially if you are running dirty ammo through it. Your firearm is like any other machine requiring regular maintenance and upkeep.
